Job Description
Role Overview
The Lead Data Center Engineer is responsible for overseeing the entire physical data center environment. This includes ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a 350 kW+ power envelope and advanced Direct-to-Chip (D2C) liquid cooling systems. Your role involves ownership of the Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs), facility electrical systems, cooling loops, rack-level power distribution, and preventive maintenance programs critical for supporting high-density AI/HPC clusters. Your priority focus will be to establish and operationalize a preventative maintenance strategy for all D2C liquid cooling loops, ensuring uptime, efficiency, and long-term reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Data Center Facility Oversight: Lead end-to-end management of the physical data center environment. Maintain facility compliance for power, cooling, environment, and safety systems. Oversee raised floor systems, containment (hot/cold aisle), environmental sensors, access control, and CCTV.
- Power Infrastructure (350 kW+) Management: Manage and monitor the total power envelope across UPS, PDUs, RPPs, busways, and rack-level power distribution. Conduct capacity planning for power growth in line with HPC/AI expansion. Coordinate with electrical teams for switchgear, breakers, grounding, and redundancy testing. Implement load balancing, circuit distribution planning, and power quality monitoring.
- Liquid Cooling Systems & CDUs Management: Own operations of Direct-to-Chip (D2C) liquid cooling loops, including racks, manifolds, quick-disconnects, and cold plates. Manage Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs): pumps, heat exchangers, flow sensors, filters, and redundancy modules. Track coolant chemistry, flow rate, pressure, delta-T, leak detection, and sensor calibration. Maintain documentation for loop topology, routing, and maintenance windows.
- Preventative Maintenance (Priority Task): Establish a detailed preventative maintenance program for D2C cooling loops, including routine flushing and coolant replacement cycles, filter cleaning and pump inspection, leak testing and sensor validation, heat exchanger cleaning and efficiency checks, and emergency response playbooks. Define maintenance frequencies, SOPs, risk ratings, and acceptance criteria. Implement logs, maintenance schedules, and automated alerts for early failure detection.
- Environmental Monitoring & Reliability: Maintain real-time monitoring for temperature, humidity, differential pressure, coolant flow, and power usage. Ensure stable PUE targets through cooling optimization and airflow/liquid flow tuning. Diagnose environmental anomalies, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
- Vendor & Project Coordination: Lead coordination with cooling OEMs, electrical vendors, and mechanical contractors. Oversee installation, commissioning, and certification of cooling and electrical equipment. Evaluate new technologies (RDHx, In-Row, liquid cooling variants) for expansion phases.
- Documentation & Compliance: Maintain runbooks, SOPs, emergency procedures, MOP/EOP scripts, and asset documentation. Ensure compliance with safety, audit, and certification standards (ISO, TIA-942, etc.). Keep accurate records of all facility infrastructure and lifecycle plans.
- Team Leadership: Guide and supervise facility engineers, technicians, and shift operators. Conduct training on liquid cooling safety, electrical safety, and emergency procedures. Drive a culture of proactive maintenance, system reliability, and operational excellence.
Qualification Required
- Bachelors degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, Mechatronics, or related engineering field.
- 612+ years in data center facility operations or liquid-cooling infrastructure.
- Certifications preferred: C
