Machine Learning Scientist II

You will be part of the Customer Technology (CT) team at Wayfair, where you will contribute to the research and development of Machine Learning (ML) systems that power real-time Search Typeahead, Search Guidance, Query Understanding & Interpretation, Query Refinement, Recommendations, and emerging GenAI-powered search capabilities. Your role will involve collaborating with scientists, engineers, analysts, and product managers to leverage machine learning skills effectively to drive Wayfair's revenue. **Key Responsibilities:** - Design, build, deploy, and refine large-scale machine learning models and algorithmic decision-making systems to solve customer-focused real-world problems. - Collaborate with commercial stakeholders to understand business challenges and develop analytical solutions accordingly. - Work closely with engineering, infrastructure, and ML platform teams to ensure best practices in building and deploying scalable ML services. - Identify opportunities and insights from data to improve models and project the ROI of proposed modifications. - Maintain a customer-centric approach in problem-solving and decision-making processes. **Qualifications Required:** - Bachelor's/Master's degree with at least 3+ years of industry experience or PhD with 1-2 years of industry experience in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field. - Strong theoretical understanding of statistical models and ML algorithms like regression, clustering, decision trees, neural networks, etc. - Proficiency in Python ML ecosystem (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, XGBoost, etc.). - Hands-on experience deploying machine learning solutions into production. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills. - Intellectual curiosity and eagerness for continuous learning. **Nice to Have:** - Experience in e-commerce or online search systems. - Knowledge of modern NLP techniques such as transformers, embeddings, semantic search. - Experience with Generative AI/LLMs (e.g., GPT, LLaMA) for real-world applications like search and personalization. - Familiarity with PyTorch and deep learning frameworks. - Understanding of vector databases, information retrieval frameworks (e.g., Elasticsearch, Vespa). - Knowledge of GCP (AWS, Azure), ML model development frameworks, and ML orchestration tools (Airflow, Kubeflow, MLFlow). - Experience with Apache Spark Ecosystem including Spark SQL and MLlib/Spark ML.
