Graphics and Layout Designer

As a skilled graphic designer with a flair for educational illustration and layout, you will be responsible for creating visually engaging university-level textbooks for various disciplines. You will collaborate with authors, editors, and publishers to conceptualize and create high-impact visual content that enhances student understanding. Your work will focus on laying out crisp, clean textbooks while observing cognitive load theory principles. You will create infographics, diagrams, charts, illustrations, and educational cartoons that convey complex ideas simply and elegantly. Key Responsibilities: - Collaborate with authors, editors, and publisher to conceptualize and create high-impact visual content. - Lay out crisp, clean textbooks following cognitive load theory principles. - Create infographics, diagrams, charts, illustrations, and educational cartoons. - Maintain visual identity and branding consistently. - Review and improve existing graphics and layouts to meet pedagogic standards. - Stay updated on best practices in educational psychology, visual literacy, and accessibility. Qualifications Required: - Able to translate academic content into clear visual explanations. - Proficient in layout design, typography, and creation of infographics. - Deep understanding of dual coding, cognitive load theory, visual hierarchy, and chunking. - Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop). - Experience with multicolumn textbook formats, captioning, glossary integration, and responsive digital layout. - Exceptional attention to detail and version control. - Familiarity with cross-platform digital delivery. - Basic understanding of XML tagging, LaTeX, or accessible PDF structure is a plus. In addition to the above responsibilities and qualifications, you will need to have an eye for detail, hold a tertiary qualification in graphic design or a related field, and have at least three years of experience in higher education publishing. As a strategic thinker who values clarity over clutter, you should be comfortable receiving and integrating feedback from academics, editors, and students. You must be able to juggle multiple projects in the face of tight timelines, be flexible where needed, and always be willing to go the extra mile.
