Role Overview:
You are being sought after for the position of Cloud & Platform DBA/Database Reliability Engineer at VML, a leading creative company within WPP. In this role, you will be responsible for operating, optimizing, and securing both managed and self-managed databases that support high-traffic ecommerce sites. Your primary focus will be on AWS and GCP platforms while also providing support for a smaller estate of hosted/on-prem databases. Your main mission will be to ensure high availability, performance, security/compliance, and cost efficiency, especially during peak events.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate managed databases (cloud) including AWS RDS/Aurora (MySQL/PostgreSQL), Google Cloud SQL, DynamoDB, MongoDB, DB2, Oracle. This involves tasks such as indexing, query plan analysis, schema design, connection pool tuning, and concurrency tuning.
- Build and support self-managed databases (hosted/on-prem/VMs) such as Oracle 19c, IBM DB2 LUW 9.511.5, MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB on Linux/Unix/Windows. Responsibilities include installation, patching, upgrades, parameter/kernel tuning, storage layout, and backup/restore.
- Ensure high availability, resilience, and disaster recovery through various methods such as Multi-AZ, read replicas, cross-region replication, and backup/restore procedures for both cloud and self-managed databases.
- Implement automation and change management processes using tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, and CI/CD for database changes. This includes drift detection, automated patching, and failover procedures.
- Enhance security, compliance, and governance by following IAM least privilege principles, managing secrets, auditing, and ensuring compliance with standards like PCI-DSS and GDPR.
- Collaborate on architecture decisions related to schema evolution, query patterns, and caching strategies. Provide guidance on ORM usage, connection pools, and patterns for microservices and event-driven systems.
- Engage in operational tasks such as partnering with development and support teams, participating in 24/7 on-call rotations, and planning migrations between self-managed and managed services.
Qualifications Required:
- Hands-on production experience with managed relational databases in AWS or GCP, specifically RDS/Aurora or Cloud SQL using MySQL or PostgreSQL.
- Experience administering at least one self-managed enterprise RDBMS in Linux/Unix environments like Oracle or IBM DB2 LUW, or the ability to ramp up quickly.
- Strong skills in performance tuning, HA/DR expertise, automation mindset, security/compliance fundamentals, and clear communication and collaboration abilities.
