Role Overview: You are being offered the opportunity to work as a Cloud & Platform DBA/Database Reliability Engineer at VML, a leading creative company under WPP. In this role, you will be responsible for operating, optimizing, and securing managed and self-managed databases that support high-traffic ecommerce sites. Your focus will be on ensuring high availability, performance, security/compliance, and cost efficiency, especially during peak events. Key Responsibilities: - Operate managed databases (cloud) including AWS RDS/Aurora, Google Cloud SQL, DynamoDB, MongoDB, DB2, and Oracle. This involves tasks such as indexing, query plan analysis, schema design, and connection pool tuning. - Build and support self-managed databases (hosted/on-prem/VMs) like Oracle, IBM DB2 LUW, MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB. Responsibilities include installation, patching, upgrades, tuning, and backup/restore. - Ensure high availability, resilience, and disaster recovery by implementing strategies such as Multi-AZ, read replicas, replication, backups, and point-in-time recovery for both cloud and self-managed databases. - Implement automation and change management using tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, and CI/CD for database changes. This includes drift detection, automated patching, and failover procedures. - Enhance observability and performance engineering through tools like CloudWatch, RDS Performance Insights, pg_stat_statements, MySQL Performance Schema, Oracle AWR/ASH/Statspack/OEM, and more. Tasks include capacity planning, load testing, and post-incident reviews. - Maintain security, compliance, and governance standards by following IAM best practices, managing secrets, ensuring audit logging, and adhering to regulations like PCI-DSS and GDPR. - Manage cost and capacity by optimizing cloud resources, forecasting capacity, and ensuring cost efficiency. This includes capacity scaling plans and license awareness for self-managed databases. - Collaborate on architecture decisions related to schema evolution, caching strategies, and ORM usage. Provide guidance on connection pools, microservices, and event-driven systems. - Work closely with development, support, and architecture teams, maintain documentation, and participate in 24/7 on-call rotations. Support migrations between self-managed and managed services with validation and rollback plans. Qualifications Required: - Hands-on experience with managed relational databases in AWS or GCP using MySQL or PostgreSQL. - Proficiency in administering at least one self-managed enterprise RDBMS in Linux/Unix environments or the ability to quickly ramp up. - Strong skills in performance tuning, high availability/disaster recovery, automation, security/compliance, and clear communication. - Additional experience in advanced database technologies like Oracle RAC, Data Guard, MongoDB, Redis, Kafka, or Kubernetes is a plus.
