Job Description
As a Climate Data Specialist at WSP Canada, you will be an integral part of the Climate Change, Resilience, and Sustainability team, focusing on supporting the Climate Risk and Resilience practice. You will collaborate with a national team of climate change engineers and scientists to assist clients in planning, delivering, and maintaining resilient assets across Canada. Working within the Environment Business Line, you will engage with various teams within the organization and contribute to global initiatives alongside resilience and sustainability experts.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Develop and apply technical workflows for analyzing environmental data, including downscaled climate model output, to create climate projections and assess current and future exposures for different weather phenomena.
- Utilize tools and analysis methods to address challenges in climate datasets and support quantitative analysis of exposure, vulnerability, risks, and resilience related to long-term climate change considerations.
- Prepare documentation summarizing methodologies and results for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Collaborate on multiple projects, ensuring effective coordination with internal colleagues, external resources, and consulting team partners.
- Contribute to the advancement of Climate Risk & Resilience Services practice through data-driven analysis and decision-making.
- Participate in quality control operations of climate analysis in projects and contribute to defining best practices for consistent and scientifically robust climate change risk assessment processes.
- Contribute to research and development initiatives to innovate practices in climate change risk and resilience.
- Collaborate with national business lines within WSP to provide advisory services focusing on climate science, climate risks, and adaptation planning.
**Qualifications:**
- Undergraduate or graduate degree in data science, hydrology, meteorology, atmospheric science, climate science, environmental engineering, or related field.
- Strong computer skills including programming (e.g., Python), data management, and processing skills.
- Proficiency in version control systems (e.g., Git, GitHub) for managing code and collaborating on projects.
- Experience with tools and coding scripts for data processing, analysis, and visualization.
- Background in statistics with experience in meteorological data analysis.
- Familiarity with high-performance computing and parallel processing in cloud environments.
- Knowledge of climate change models, data portals, and statistical/dynamical downscaling.
- Understanding of AI and machine learning is an asset.
- Experience in frequency analysis of extreme climate events, hazard modeling, vulnerability assessments, and risk evaluations.
- Strong communication skills for presenting technical analysis to diverse audiences.
- Attention to detail, commitment to accuracy, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
